Silver is both a precious metal and an industrial input, which gives its price a hybrid character — it trades as a monetary hedge similar to gold, but roughly 55% of annual demand comes from industrial uses including solar panels (photovoltaic cells), electronics, and electric-vehicle wiring. The result is higher day-to-day volatility than gold and a closer correlation with cyclical equities. The gold-to-silver ratio (typically 60–90 over the long run) is a common gauge used to compare relative valuation between the two metals.
The most liquid US-listed silver ETF is SLV (iShares Silver Trust), with PSLV (Sprott Physical Silver Trust) and SIVR (Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver) as alternatives. Miner-equity exposure runs through SIL (Global X Silver Miners) and SILJ (Amplify Junior Silver Miners). Top mining names include Pan American Silver (PAAS), First Majestic Silver (AG), MAG Silver (MAG), and Silvercorp Metals (SVM). Silver supply is dominated by Mexico, Peru, and China; significant production also comes as a by-product of lead-zinc and copper mining, so silver prices stay sensitive to base-metals cycles even outside their precious-metal context.
