Nightly Market Digest
Friday, October 2, 2026
Wall Street closed out the week on a high note Friday, driven by a cooler-than-expected jobs report that aggressively eased interest rate anxieties. The technology-heavy Nasdaq led the charge, climbing 1.19% to 27,190.863, while the S&P 500 added 0.73% to finish at 7,722.72. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.49% to 51,176.96, and the Russell 2000 advanced 0.94% to 2,832.895 as the VIX tumbled 6.59% to 15.31, signaling a broad return of market confidence.
Sectors in focus: Tech and manufacturing led the tape, propelled by US 10-year Treasury yields retreating from 24-year highs to 5.25%. This drop followed a massive September Nonfarm Payrolls miss—adding just 29,000 jobs against 84,000-90,000 expectations—and an unemployment rate ticking up to 4.2%. The soft data slashed October Fed rate hike odds to 21-24%, boosting growth-sensitive groups like Semiconductors & Related Devices (+3.49%), Printed Circuit Boards (+2.94%), and Special Industry Machinery, NEC (+5.06%). A 5% surge from Tesla on strong vehicle deliveries further anchored the tech rally. Conversely, the cooling labor market weighed on corporate services, dragging down Services-Help Supply Services (-3.16%) and Services-Management Consulting Services (-2.94%). WTI Crude fell 1.57% to 91.41, pressuring Drilling Oil & Gas Wells (-1.15%), as easing economic heat overshadowed the deployment of 9,000 US troops to the Middle East. Gold also slipped 0.81% to 4,168.1.
On the radar: Next week shifts attention from labor to inflation and early corporate earnings:
- Oct 5: US ISM Services PMI (expected at 55.0)
- Oct 6: Earnings from PepsiCo (PEP), Constellation Brands (STZ), and Lamb Weston (LW)
- Oct 7: FOMC Minutes from the September meeting; earnings from Levi Strauss (LEVI) and Applied Digital (APLD)
- Oct 8: Weekly Initial Jobless Claims
- Oct 9: September Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Real Earnings report
