Wall Street closed with a defensive, mixed tone on Wednesday as escalating geopolitical tensions and hawkish Fed minutes weighed on equities. The Dow Jones tumbled 1.09% to 52,348.39, the S&P 500 slipped 0.28% to 7,482.71, and the Russell 2000 dropped 0.88% to 2,956.389, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq managed to eke out a 0.20% gain to 25,870.652. Heightened volatility and a flight to safety pushed the VIX up 4.77% to 16.9 following renewed hostilities in the Middle East.
Sectors in focus:
- Energy surges: President Trump declared the US-Iran ceasefire effectively "over" at the NATO summit amid strikes on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US retaliatory attacks. This sparked a 6.53% spike in WTI Crude to 75.04. The oil shock drove related industries to the top of the leaderboard, with Drilling Oil & Gas Wells jumping 4.25%, Petroleum Refining gaining 3.78%, and Oil & Gas Field Services rising 2.98%.
- Airlines and retail lag: The sudden fuel cost shock battered travel stocks, threatening profit margins and guidance. Personal Credit Institutions fell 3.84%, and Retail-Miscellaneous Retail shed 3.50%.
- Precious metals retreat: Gold slid 1.75% to 4,084.8. A hawkish set of FOMC minutes under new Chair Kevin Warsh—where 9 of 18 members projected a rate hike before year-end—combined with the oil-driven inflation shock to push real Treasury yields higher. This increased the opportunity cost of holding bullion, sinking Gold and Silver Ores by 3.71%. Electrical Industrial Apparatus also lagged, shedding 3.91%.
On the radar: Investors will look to upcoming inflation data and the start of earnings season to gauge the impact of rising energy costs.
