Wall Street embraced a decisive risk-on rally this Thursday, fueled by retreating Treasury yields and dovish central bank commentary. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the broader market, climbing 1.40% to 26,584.06, while the Dow Jones advanced 1.18% to 53,686.11 and the S&P 500 added 1.06% to close at 7,747.71. Small caps also caught a bid as the Russell 2000 rose 0.51% to 2,968.271, and investor anxiety cooled with the VIX plunging 5.79% to 14.32.
Sectors in focus:
- Financials break out: Finance Services skyrocketed 7.61% and Security Brokers, Dealers & Flotation Companies gained 3.89%. The catalyst was Fed Governor Christopher Waller signaling support for holding rates steady if disinflation continues, which dropped September rate hike odds to roughly 50% and pulled the 10-year yield down to 4.75%.
- Tech and Cloud surge: Wholesale-Computers & Peripheral Equipment (+3.26%) and Printed Circuit Boards (+2.60%) outperformed. The space was energized by Nvidia's $13 billion acquisition of AI platform Hugging Face and Snowflake’s massive 20% post-earnings surge.
- Energy and Mining lag: Despite WTI Crude ticking up 0.75% to 91.69 on escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, Drilling Oil & Gas Wells sank 3.28%. Furthermore, while Gold jumped 2.36% to a lofty 4,518.8, Metal Mining dropped 1.99%, joining Food and Kindred Products (-2.76%) at the bottom of the daily tape.
On the radar: The market will shift its focus to critical labor and inflation data ahead of the central bank's next major policy move.
- Sep 04: August Nonfarm Payrolls (70k forecast) and Unemployment Rate (4.2% est)
- Sep 07: U.S. Markets Closed for Labor Day
- Sep 10-11: August Producer Price Index (PPI), followed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Real Earnings
- Sep 15-16: FOMC Meeting and Interest Rate Decision
