U.S. equities slipped into the red on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve delivered its first rate hike in three years, raising the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a 3.75%–4.00% range. Under new Chair Kevin Warsh, the central bank issued a hawkish dot plot and pointed to persistent inflation, a narrative reinforced by robust August retail sales (up 1.2%) and a 7.0% year-over-year jump in import prices. The Dow Jones took the heaviest hit, dropping 1.21% to 51,461.9, while the S&P 500 fell 0.45% to 7,551.81, the Russell 2000 shed 0.40% to 2,858.811, and the Nasdaq finished nearly flat at 25,978.424 (-0.01%), as the VIX crept up 2.97% to 17.71.
Sectors in focus:
- Energy drags: Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas plummeted 5.54% alongside Drilling Oil & Gas Wells (-5.53%). The sell-off was driven by WTI Crude's 3.47% plunge to 102.16 after reports surfaced that Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline would partially resume operations within days, easing supply fears.
- Precious metals slide: Higher rates weighed on Gold, which slipped 0.66% to 4,304.3, pulling Gold and Silver Ores down 2.47%.
- Defensive and technical bright spots: Electrical Industrial Apparatus led the market, gaining 3.01%, followed by Laboratory Analytical Instruments at +2.33%. Healthcare also provided a defensive shelter amidst the hawkish shock, with General Medical & Surgical Hospitals rising 1.65% and Home Health Care Services adding 1.37%.
On the radar:
- Sep 17: US Housing Starts and Building Permits (Aug), Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index (Sep)
- Sep 18: US Industrial Production and Capacity Utilization (Aug), University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment (Prelim)
- Sep 22: Richmond Fed Manufacturing Index (Sep)
