Wall Street kicked off the week with a tech-led advance, propelling the Nasdaq up 1.05% to a record high of 27,477.31. Megacap technology names caught a heavy bid on renewed AI optimism and a remarkably soft September jobs print (29,000 added versus 84,000 expected), which also lifted the S&P 500 by 0.66% to 7,773.95 and the Dow Jones by 0.18% to 51,267.9. The small-cap Russell 2000 added 0.50% to 2,847.136, while the VIX ticked up 1.37% to 15.52 and Gold edged 0.20% higher to 4,170.7.
Sectors in focus
- Media & Tech breakouts: Television Broadcasting Stations dominated the tape (+15.07%), driven by positive earnings revisions for Warner Bros. Discovery and sector-wide buyout speculation. Software was independently energized by PTC's 34% spike after accepting a $22.6 billion buyout from Schneider Electric.
- Energy & Defense shifts: WTI Crude slid 2.09% to 89.21 following a G7 agreement to release 100 million barrels of emergency reserves to counter high fuel costs, though Drilling Oil & Gas Wells managed a 4.58% gain. Meanwhile, Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles (-2.93%) and Aircraft (-1.89%) lagged as US missile stockpiles hit critically low levels amid ongoing overseas conflicts.
- Homebuilders pressured: Residential Building Contractors (-2.15%) and Operative Builders (-2.02%) slumped as the 10-year Treasury yield stubbornly held at 5.31%, punishing rate-sensitive names despite the cooling labor data.
