Wall Street ended Thursday with a mixed tone as surging yields and hawkish Fed commentary weighed heavily on growth equities. The tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbled 1.25% to 27,193.34 and the S&P 500 dropped 0.47% to 7,765.36, while the Dow Jones edged up 0.10% to 51,231.64 and the Russell 2000 finished flat (+0.03% to 2,794.128). Volatility crept higher, with the VIX rising 2.19% to 15.41, as initial jobless claims unexpectedly fell to 197,000, signaling a tight labor market that gives the Fed ample room to hold rates higher.
Sectors in focus:
- Energy & Metals: Petroleum Refining climbed 3.10% as WTI Crude surged 3.21% to 91.11. The jump was fueled by Hurricane Isaias shutting down 25% of Gulf oil production and escalating Middle East shipping attacks. Gold also caught a modest bid, rising 0.42% to 4,157.9.
- Tech & Semiconductors: With 10-year Treasury yields hitting 5.35% (the highest since 2002) following hawkish remarks from Fed Governor Waller, tech hardware lagged. Semiconductors & Related Devices plunged 3.49% and Computer Storage Devices fell 3.57% following Samsung's Q3 profit miss and a Citi downgrade of NXP Semiconductors over slow automotive recovery.
- Beverages & Services: The Beverages industry led all groups (+3.71%), alongside Services-Management Consulting Services (+2.75%), lifted by a 6.1% pop in Chipotle amid rumors of a Starbucks takeover exploration spearheaded by CEO Brian Niccol.
