U.S. equities surged on Wednesday as a decisive Democratic sweep of both congressional chambers in the 2026 midterms eliminated election uncertainty and signaled market-friendly legislative gridlock. The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the rally, soaring 3.03% to 53,356.12, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 both jumped 1.58% to 7,688.62 and 2,856.95, respectively. The tech-heavy Nasdaq added 1.44% to 25,736.514, and the VIX volatility index collapsed 20.16% to 16.63 as the contested-transition risk premium rapidly evaporated.
Sectors in focus:
- Healthcare surges: Medical and hospital sectors dominated the tape on expectations of increased federal support under the new Congress. Electromedical & Electrotherapeutic Apparatus soared 8.73%, and General Medical & Surgical Hospitals jumped 8.53%.
- Energy & infrastructure drag: WTI Crude plunged 7.92% to $88.48 after VP JD Vance blamed GOP midterm losses on the Iran war, stoking hopes for a diplomatic "energy ceasefire." This dragged Drilling Oil & Gas Wells down 6.45%. Elsewhere, fears of tighter Democratic regulatory oversight hammered infrastructure and tech hardware, sending Water, Sewer, Pipeline, Comm & Power Line Construction down 11.27% and Printed Circuit Boards falling 8.10%.
- Gold shines: The precious metal rallied 3.44% to $4,076.1 as the U.S. dollar hit a one-month low and 10-year Treasury yields fell to 4.92% in the wake of the electoral sweep.
On the radar:
- Nov 06: October Nonfarm Payrolls (Jobs Report)
- Nov 10: October Consumer Price Index (CPI) release
- Nov 12: Initial Jobless Claims and NAR Existing Home Sales
- Nov 13: Producer Price Index (PPI) data
