Wall Street closed out the week on a mixed note Friday as a red-hot October jobs report dramatically shifted interest rate expectations. The Dow Jones slipped 0.46% to 51,285.73, but the Nasdaq jumped 1.09% to 24,579.424, staging a technical rebound following Thursday's brutal 5.5% plunge into correction territory. The S&P 500 added 0.31% to close at 7,376.86, and the Russell 2000 advanced 0.89% to 2,754.106, while market anxiety cooled as the VIX shed 9.23% to 25.58.
Sectors in focus
- Aerospace & Defense: Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles skyrocketed 14.78%, alongside Aircraft (+9.31%) and Aircraft Parts (+9.16%). The massive rally was fueled by a $1.3 billion rocket engine deal between Firefly Aerospace and AST SpaceMobile.
- Lagging Services: Nonfarm Payrolls surged by 165,000—shattering the 59,000 consensus—which pushed the 10-year Treasury yield toward 4.88%. These rising borrowing costs triggered a rotation out of economically sensitive firms, pressuring Help Supply Services (-5.83%) and Management Consulting Services (-4.90%).
- AI & Tech: AI-exposed stocks remained highly volatile as investors digested the potential impacts of a Democratic 'Blue Wave' in the midterms and fresh local restrictions on data center expansions.
On the radar Next week brings a heavy slate of critical inflation data and corporate earnings as markets price in a 79.1% probability of a December Fed rate hike:
- Nov 09: China Consumer Price Index (CPI) and earnings from Take-Two Interactive and Skydance.
- Nov 10: U.S. October Consumer Price Index (CPI) report.
- Nov 12: UK Q3 GDP, U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims, and earnings from Cisco Systems and Applied Materials.
- Nov 13: U.S. October Producer Price Index (PPI) report.
