U.S. equities edged higher on Wednesday, extending recent gains as cooler-than-expected inflation data fueled hopes for interest rate cuts. The Nasdaq led the charge, climbing 0.62% to 26,269.227, while the S&P 500 added 0.38% to 7,572.4, the Russell 2000 gained 0.39% to 2,976.259, and the Dow Jones finished up 0.29% at 52,658.64. A surprise 0.3% drop in June PPI pushed the 10-year Treasury yield down to 4.55%, overshadowing newly confirmed Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish Senate testimony and sending the VIX down 5.03% to 15.67, while Gold remained mostly flat, dipping 0.02% to 4,068.7.
Sectors in focus:
- Real Estate & Autos led: Real Estate Agents & Managers surged 5.07% and Motor Vehicles jumped 3.94% as cooling yields boosted housing affordability and financing outlooks. Lucid (LCID) was a standout, skyrocketing 29% after denying bankruptcy rumors.
- Tech Hardware lagged: Computer Storage Devices plunged 7.58% and Computer Communications Equipment fell 4.87%. Memory stocks faced heavy profit-taking following Tuesday's massive rally, which was initially sparked by IBM's spending shift warning.
- Financials kicked off strong: BlackRock rallied 6% after crushing Q2 profit estimates and hitting a record $15.3 trillion in assets under management.
- Energy gained: WTI Crude rose 1.30% to 80.37, as lingering geopolitical tensions outweighed reports of a potential U.S.-Iran ceasefire framework.
On the radar:
- Thursday, July 16: June Retail Sales, Weekly Jobless Claims, and the Philly Fed Index, alongside major earnings from Netflix (NFLX), UnitedHealth (UNH), and Abbott (ABT).
- Friday, July 17: June U.S. Housing Starts and Building Permits.
- Looking ahead: Mega-cap earnings kick into high gear next week with Tesla, Alphabet, and Visa reporting on July 21, followed by IBM on July 22 as the market digests its recent historic 25% preliminary wipeout.
