Wall Street closed with modest losses on Tuesday as investors exercised caution ahead of tomorrow's highly anticipated July inflation data. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the retreat, shedding 0.60% to settle at 26,445.445, while the S&P 500 dipped 0.32% to 7,728.2 and the Dow Jones fell 0.34% to 53,791.85. However, market internals were mixed rather than purely bearish; a notable rotation away from overextended AI-heavy mega-caps lifted small-cap stocks, driving the Russell 2000 up 0.32% to 3,027.115, while the VIX surprisingly retreated 1.16% to 15.28.
Sectors in focus:
- Tech Hardware & Instruments: Computer Storage Devices (+3.31%) and Instruments for Measuring & Testing of Electricity (+3.91%) surged to the top of the leaderboard. These gains are fueled by rampant "chipflation" and AI-driven memory shortages, which have pushed DRAM and SSD prices up to 130% higher than 2025 levels.
- Energy & Refining: Petroleum Refining advanced 2.76% as WTI Crude climbed 1.56% to 83.41 (while Gold also ticked up 0.19% to 4,428.2). Oil prices continue to find support from persistent geopolitical tensions with Iran and ongoing global supply disruptions stemming from February's Strait of Hormuz conflict.
- Laggards: On the downside, cyclical and consumer-sensitive sectors struggled. Apparel & Other Finished Products of Fabrics tumbled 3.68%, and Heavy Construction dropped 3.56%.
On the radar:
- Aug 12: July Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, with economists expecting a deceleration to 3.4% year-over-year from June's 3.5%.
- Aug 13: July Producer Price Index (PPI) and Weekly Jobless Claims.
- Aug 14: July Retail Sales and University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment.
- Aug 18 & 19: US Housing Starts and Building Permits (Aug 18), followed by the release of the July FOMC Meeting Minutes (Aug 19).
