Wall Street closed firmly in the red on Monday as geopolitical tensions and surging bond yields sapped risk appetite. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the retreat, dropping 0.92% to 26,820.38, while the S&P 500 shed 0.77% to close at 7,683.69 and the Dow Jones slipped 0.67% to 51,481.51. The small-cap Russell 2000 fell 0.69% to 2,817.912, and the VIX volatility index jumped 8.07% to 16.07 as market anxiety broadened across equities.
Sectors in focus:
- Energy and Consumer Defensives: President Trump's rejection of an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz reignited supply fears, pushing WTI Crude up 1.04% to 93.37. The domestic trucking industry advanced 1.10%, while defensive retail pockets like Retail-Family Clothing Stores (+1.57%) and Retail-Grocery Stores (+0.99%) caught bids. Biological Products led all industries, surging 4.57%.
- Metals and Aerospace: The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield surged to a fresh 20-year high of 5.25%. This crushed Gold's traditional safe-haven appeal amid a stronger dollar, sending the metal plunging 4.07% to 4,145.3. Consequently, Gold and Silver Ores tumbled 5.38% and Metal Mining dropped 2.81%. Surging energy costs also fueled inflation fears, pushing market expectations for a 25bps Fed rate hike in October to 68 percent. This hawkish shift pressured capital-intensive industries like Aircraft (-4.83%) and Electrical Industrial Apparatus (-4.91%). Despite the macro headwinds, Nvidia bucked the downward trend, rallying on news of a historic share buyback program and the release of new open-source AI tools.
On the radar:
- Sep 29: August JOLTS Job Openings data.
- Sep 30: ADP Private Payrolls, August PCE Price Index (the Fed's preferred inflation gauge), and Q4 earnings from Micron Technology (MU).
- Oct 1: ISM Manufacturing PMI and Nike (NKE) earnings.
- Oct 2: September Nonfarm Payrolls and Unemployment Rate (consensus 90k-98k jobs, 4.1% rate).
