U.S. equities pulled back from record highs on Wednesday as a surging 10-year Treasury yield and rising geopolitical tensions capped risk appetite. The S&P 500 slipped 0.22% to 7,801.77 and the Nasdaq fell 0.22% to 27,538.691, while the Dow Jones dropped 0.66% to 51,179.87. High real yields and a 17-month high in the US Dollar Index heavily pressured small caps, sending the Russell 2000 tumbling 1.31% to 2,793.204, while the VIX edged up 0.47% to 15.08.
Sectors in focus
- Defensive rotation: Retail-Grocery Stores (+1.52%) and General Medical Hospitals (+0.97%) led the market as investors sought safety amid the 10-year yield spiking to 5.31%, its highest level since 2002.
- Industrials and Aerospace lag: The Dow was dragged lower by a 6% downgrade-driven drop in Caterpillar, fueling broader industrial jitters that punished Misc Industrial Machinery (-3.99%) and Electrical Industrial Apparatus (-4.22%). Meanwhile, despite Iranian drone attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz driving Brent crude toward $102/bbl (though WTI Crude actually slipped 0.57% to 88.93), Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles plunged 4.96% alongside Aircraft Parts (-4.05%).
- Precious Metals decline: The soaring US Dollar Index weighed heavily on commodities, pushing Gold down 1.24% to 4,135.3 and sending Gold and Silver Ores plunging 4.30%.
On the radar Investors remained cautious as they digested the afternoon release of the September FOMC meeting minutes for clues on future rate hikes. Looking ahead, the calendar is packed:
- Oct 08: Weekly Initial Jobless Claims
- Oct 13: Q3 Earnings season begins with JPMorgan Chase (JPM) results
- Oct 14: September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation report
- Oct 27-28: FOMC policy meeting and interest rate decision
- Oct 29: Advance Q3 GDP estimate and September PCE inflation data
