The one thing most Dow Jones lists get wrong: weight has nothing to do with company size.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is price-weighted. A stock's influence comes from its share price alone, so a company with a $300 share price moves the index three times as much as one trading at $100 — no matter which is the larger business. Nearly every other major index, the S&P 500 included, weights by market capitalisation instead.
The divisor is what turns that sum of prices into the familiar index level. It is adjusted whenever a company is swapped in or out, or a constituent splits its stock, so the index level itself does not jump on those events. At its current value, a $1 move in any single Dow stock shifts the index by about 5.94 points, which is why a bad day for the highest-priced constituents can drag the whole average down even when most of the 30 are up.
We derive the divisor from the constituent closes and the index close on September 9, 2026, rather than reading it from a vendor feed. It has held to five decimal places across the trailing sessions, which is the check that the constituent list on this page is complete and current.
Sector exposure by index weight — that is, by share price. This looks different from a cap-weighted sector breakdown of the same 30 companies.
Membership is decided by the S&P Dow Jones Indices averages committee rather than by a formula, so changes are rare and announced in advance.
The 30 companies currently in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are GS, CAT, MSFT, UNH, AMGN, V, TRV, JPM, GOOGL, AXP, SHW, AAPL, HD, JNJ, MCD, AMZN, CRM, IBM, NVDA, CVX, BA, HON, MMM, MRK, PG, CSCO, WMT, DIS, KO, NKE. Membership is set by the S&P Dow Jones Indices averages committee, not by a fixed rule, and changes only a few times per decade.
By share price, not company size. Each stock's weight is its share price divided by the sum of all 30 share prices, currently $8,821.45. That is why a company with a high share price carries more influence than a far larger company whose shares are cheap. Almost every other major index, including the S&P 500, is weighted by market capitalisation instead.
Goldman Sachs (GS) carries the largest weight at about 11.67%, because at $1,029.88 it has the highest share price in the index, contributing roughly 6,121 of the index's points.
Approximately 0.16825. The sum of the 30 share prices is divided by it to produce the index level, and it is adjusted whenever a company is swapped in or out or a constituent splits its stock, so the index level does not jump. At that value, a $1 move in any single Dow stock shifts the index by about 5.94 points. We derive it from the constituent closes and the published index close rather than reading it from a vendor feed.
30. The count has been fixed at 30 since 1928, though the names have turned over many times.
Alphabet (GOOGL) replaced Verizon (VZ). S&P Dow Jones Indices cited Alphabet’s larger market capitalisation and share price, and the index’s exposure to artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital advertising. Honeywell was reviewed at the same time and retained. Before that, nvidia (NVDA) replaced Intel (INTC) and Sherwin-Williams (SHW) replaced Dow Inc. (DOW), refreshing the index’s semiconductor and materials representation.
Caterpillar (CAT) leads the index year to date at +42.4%, while Honeywell (HON) is the weakest at -47.5%. Both figures are measured from last year's closing price and update daily.
