Wall Street took a broad hit on Thursday as fading bond market relief and a grim retail bellwether dragged down equities. The Dow Jones tumbled 1.32% to 52,759.21, paced by a steep 6% drop in Walmart following its slowest quarterly sales growth in six years, while the S&P 500 shed 0.87% to 7,641.16 and the Nasdaq fell 1.00% to 26,067.166. Small-caps fared the worst with the Russell 2000 retreating 1.34% to 2,992.434, and volatility flared as the VIX jumped 7.52% to 16.01; market anxiety was compounded by the US national debt crossing the $40 trillion milestone, pushing the 10-year Treasury yield back toward 4.70%.
Sectors in focus:
- Financials & Energy: Finance Services (+2.91%) and Security & Commodity Brokers (+1.70%) outperformed as rebounding yields—following the fading impact of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's buyback plan—boosted bank margins. Meanwhile, Drilling Oil & Gas Wells (+1.87%) and Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (+1.30%) climbed alongside WTI Crude, which surged 2.45% to 86.46 after President Trump threatened a "crushing economic operation" against Iran amid Strait of Hormuz disruptions. Safe-haven flows also lifted Gold 0.64% to 4,574.5.
- Aerospace & Industrials: Defense and aviation names lagged severely, with Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles (-5.39%) and Aircraft (-4.31%) plunging. Equipment Rental & Leasing (-3.75%) and Electrical Industrial Apparatus (-4.38%) also suffered as higher borrowing costs weighed on capital-intensive sectors.
