Wall Street kicked off the week in the red as hawkish Fed bets, climbing yields, and geopolitical tensions weighed on risk appetite. The S&P 500 shed 0.48% to finish at 7,619.98, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq led the major indices lower, dropping 0.56% to 26,186.414 as the 10-year Treasury yield briefly touched 5.0% for the first time since 2023. The Dow Jones dipped 0.29% to 52,421.2, the Russell 2000 slipped 0.40% to 2,892.237, and the VIX volatility gauge jumped 7.95% to 17.1.

Sectors in focus:

  • AI Hardware vs. Software: Hardware took a severe beating today. Semiconductors & related devices plunged 6.64%, and printed circuit boards tumbled 6.97%. The sell-off was sparked by a weekend essay from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei—backed by OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceX's Elon Musk—calling for a slowdown in AI development. The rising 10-year yield added further pressure to these rate-sensitive growth stocks. Conversely, software rotated higher, with computer programming services surging 5.56% and prepackaged software gaining 3.94%.
  • Energy & Gold: WTI Crude climbed 1.96% to $102.01 a barrel after Saudi Arabia closed its East-West pipeline following drone attacks from Iraq, threatening 4% of global supply. Meanwhile, Gold slipped 1.63% to 4,337.1.
  • Financials: Bank of America dragged the broader market, dropping 5.1% after CEO Brian Moynihan warned of a 10% decline in Q3 investment banking and trading fees.

On the radar: Markets are bracing for a massive week of central bank action. Following sticky August CPI data, futures are now pricing a 90% probability of a 25-basis-point hike at Wednesday's Fed meeting.

  • Tuesday, Sept 15: Empire State Manufacturing Index (Sept)
  • Wednesday, Sept 16: FOMC Interest Rate Decision and Economic Projections; US Retail Sales (Aug)
