Wall Street kicked off the week with a massive "risk-on" rally as geopolitical tensions eased and energy prices plunged. The tech-heavy Nasdaq led the charge, surging 3.07% to 26,683.941, while the S&P 500 climbed 1.65% to 7,554.29 and the Dow Jones added 0.92% to 51,671.03. Small caps joined the broader market advance, lifting the Russell 2000 by 1.51% to 2,965.087, which helped crush the VIX fear gauge by 16.67% down to 16.2.
Sectors in focus:
- Tech and Airlines take flight: A tentative peace deal between the U.S. and Iran to end a three-month conflict boosted market sentiment. Falling energy costs supercharged tech, with Computer Storage Devices jumping 7.08% and AMD soaring 8% to a record high on its Ryzen AI Halo launch. The prospect of lower fuel expenses also lifted Aircraft (+5.22%), with United (+4.2%) and American (+3.2%) rallying hard.
- Energy drops: The geopolitical de-escalation includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and removing a U.S. naval blockade, signaling a return of global oil supply. WTI Crude tumbled 4.38% to 81.16, dragging down Drilling Oil & Gas Wells (-4.95%), Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (-3.79%), and Petroleum Refining (-3.40%).
- Precious Metals shine: Investors continued hedging against a persistent 4.2% YoY May CPI print. Gold jumped 2.19% to 4,331.8, pushing Gold and Silver Ores to the top of the industry leaderboard with a 7.28% gain.
On the radar:
- Jun 16: May Housing Starts and the start of the two-day FOMC meeting.
- Jun 17: May Retail Sales and the highly anticipated FOMC interest rate decision—the first under new Chair Kevin Warsh.
- Jun 18: Weekly Jobless Claims, alongside earnings from Micron Technology, Kroger, Lennar, and FedEx.
- Jun 19: U.S. markets are CLOSED for the Juneteenth holiday.
