Wall Street endured a sharp reversal on Wednesday as Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s hawkish debut rattled investors. Despite early record highs for the Dow following a stronger-than-expected 0.9% jump in May retail sales, markets sold off heavily after the FOMC held rates at 3.50%-3.75% and revealed that 9 of 18 policymakers favor a rate hike this year to combat sticky 3.8% inflation. The Nasdaq bore the brunt of the selloff, tumbling 1.34% to 26,021.656, followed by the S&P 500 dropping 1.21% to 7,420.1, the Dow shedding 0.98% to 51,492.55, and the Russell 2000 sliding 0.72% to 2,917.982 as the VIX spiked 12.37% to 18.44.
Sectors in focus:
- Leaders: Defensive and defense-adjacent pockets caught bids amid the hawkish policy pivot and lingering geopolitical uncertainties surrounding the Strait of Hormuz blockade. Pharmaceutical Preparations (+2.64%) and Biological Products (+2.37%) led the broader market, alongside Aircraft Parts & Auxiliary Equipment (+1.73%).
- Laggards: Warsh's announcement ending "forward guidance" forces markets to react to raw economic data, punishing consumer and rate-sensitive groups. Cable & Other Pay Television Services plunged 8.80%, Trucking slid 5.62%, and Retail-Auto Dealers & Gasoline Stations dropped 4.72%. Additionally, Gold and Silver Ores sank 3.81% as spot Gold dropped 1.66% to 4,282.2, while WTI Crude slipped 0.32% to 75.03.
On the radar:
- Jun 18: Weekly Initial Jobless Claims and Accenture (ACN) Q3 earnings.
- Jun 19: U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding scheduled signing deadline.
- Jun 22: People's Bank of China (PBoC) interest rate decision.
