Wall Street wrapped up Thursday on a decidedly risk-on note, propelled by blowout tech earnings and resilient labor data showing weekly jobless claims dipped to 203,000 against a 210,000 consensus. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite led the charge, surging 1.57% to 26,541.352, while the S&P 500 added 0.72% to close at 7,730.99. The Dow Jones Industrial Average crept up 0.20% to 53,569.44, and the small-cap Russell 2000 gained 0.28% to 3,014.339 as the VIX retreated 4.60% to 14.51.
Sectors in focus:
- AI and Software: Services-Prepackaged Software (+5.93%) and Computer Programming Services (+3.83%) skyrocketed after Nvidia surged 8.7% on record $96.2 billion Q2 revenue and a massive $108 billion Q3 forecast. This durable AI infrastructure boom also lifted Salesforce (+11.2%) and CrowdStrike (+9%).
- Energy: Oil & Gas Field Services (+3.44%) and Drilling (+3.37%) climbed alongside WTI Crude, which rose 1.53% to 83.49 a barrel amid Middle East geopolitical tensions and reports of a potential Iran-Oman revenue-sharing deal for Strait of Hormuz traffic. Gold also edged 0.06% higher to 4,656.
- Retail and Consumer: Retail-Family Clothing Stores (-2.95%), Retail-Eating Places (-2.59%), and Retail-Grocery Stores (-2.51%) lagged as investors weighed mixed earnings from Best Buy and Dollar General against persistent inflation fears.
On the radar: All eyes now turn to a data-heavy Friday and upcoming tech milestones:
- Aug 28: Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his keynote speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium. Markets will concurrently digest the July PCE Price Index—the Fed's preferred inflation gauge—and the second estimate of Q2 GDP growth.
- Sep 01: Apple officially undergoes its leadership transition as John Ternus succeeds Tim Cook as CEO.
- Sep 02: Broadcom (AVGO) reports Q3 earnings, offering another major test for the semiconductor and AI trade.
